Before & After: Adventure-Inspired Nursery Makeover

How mum-to-be Lucy took her nursery decor to stylish new heights.

When mum-to-be Lucy embarked on transforming her spare bedroom into a nursery, she looked to her recent travels for inspiration: ‘We hiked through Spain and France last year and felt very inspired by the mountainous landscape.

'We had also collected lots of things over the last year for our baby’s room, including animals and adventure-themed pieces. We wanted a gender-neutral nursery scheme – no pink and blue for this baby!’

Having decided on a theme and a striking wall mural, she then created a moodboard to help find a colour palette; ‘it evolved from grey hues to what you see now – lots of teal. Teal seemed a happier colour for a baby than grey!’

It only took Lucy and her partner a weekend to complete, using a combination of masking tape and freehand lines to create the design.

‘We used Proud Peacock for the foreground colour and the other three nursery walls. The sky is Polished Pebble as it’s a soft, calming colour and the mountains were painted in Crispy Crumble, leftover from a room we painted in another part of the house. Pure Brilliant White was then used for the snow caps.’

When it came to furniture, the outdoorsy theme continued: ‘We bought a simple chest of drawers as they are the perfect size for our small room, then replaced the knobs with ceramic owl handles found from an online boutique.

Lastly I bought a 1950’s vintage print of the Kangaroos in London Zoo – a nod to me growing up in Australia,’ Lucy says.

‘The colour choice makes the space feel so calm. We wanted to create a tranquil and serene space so that (with any luck) our baby will pick up on these calming vibes!

I love the fact that my partner and I painted the mural – we had a lot of fun creating it together! It was inspired by our adventures and hopefully it will inspire our little one to be an adventurer one day.’
