Colour lookbook: quick & easy home improvement ideas

For this episode we turn our attention to a popular trend in the world of decorating: Micro Makeovers. These are small home improvements that can make a big difference to the look and feel of a room.

When we think of quick and easy home improvement ideas, feature walls are often our go-to! Why? Because they’re a simple, yet impactful way to transform any space. Plus, you only need to paint a section of your wall, so they don’t take too long to complete.

In this episode, we pick out some of our favourite feature wall ideas and must-have paints to use. Here they are:

Discover Dulux Simply Refresh Feature Wall

Small home improvements have never been more fun thanks to the Dulux Simply Refresh range. With Dulux Simply Refresh Feature Wall, it’s quick and easy to make a statement in your home.

Choose from a striking collection of vibrant and rich shades, including the gorgeous Emerald Glade which can instantly elevate your space. Dulux Simply Refresh is also covered by the One Coat Guarantee, promising to give you coverage in just one coat! So, you can spend less time painting, and more time admiring your new creation.

Create an arch with the Dulux Colour of the Year 2021

If you’re looking for feature wall ideas, why not create an arch with Brave GroundTM? Small home improvements like this can add real interest and style to your space.

What’s more, you can paint an arch in just one afternoon! Don’t believe us? Marianne showed Dulux Colour 2021 Ambassador Clara Amfo how easy it really is to achieve this Micro Makeover. Watch Clara get creative!

Take inspiration from ColourFutures 2021

Alongside the Colour of the Year 2021, Brave GroundTM, are four complementary and inspiring colour palettes. Each collection conjures up different feelings in your home.

The Earth Palette contains lots of blues, greys and greens – the colours of the earth, sea and sky. When used in combination, these layers of tones can add dimension to a room.

For example, you could paint a circle in Midnight Garden or a Mysterious Teal on a wall decorated in Night Seas to beautifully frame and draw attention to your potted plants or decorative accessories. The technique is similar to painting an arch, by using chalk and string.

There are lots more feature wall ideas you can try, like the geometric paint effect, where you can use blocks of colour and sharp diagonal lines to create a focal point.

Other home improvement ideas include painting picture frames, vases or plant pots. These small home improvements are a simple way to add a burst of colour and personality to a space – and they can be done in a jiffy! Why not have a go at creating your own watercolour artwork

Dr Dulux: top tips for upcycling furniture

This is the part of the podcast where our own doctor of decorating, Marianne, prescribes the antidote for your DIY ailments.

Catherine, a Dulux UK Instagram follower, asks Dr Dulux: “I don't have a space for a home office. How can I paint my old dressing table and turn it into a desk?”

Upcycling furniture is a great way to breathe new life into an exhausted piece of furniture. Not only that, upcycling furniture lets you decorate your home cheaply and uniquely.

What better way to put your own stamp on your WFH setup, than by turning an old dressing table into a desk? All you need is a fresh lick of paint, some very fine sandpaper and a little imagination!

Follow the link to learn how to upcycle a desk with Dulux paint – it really only takes a few simple steps.

There are so many colours Catherine could pick, it all depends on the mood she wants to create. For a calming workspace, Marianne recommends Willow Tree or Polished Pebble. Yet in the how-to video, Marianne uses the strong Teal Velvet in Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood to supercharge the space!

Dr Dulux: How to paint the outside of your home

Ed from Lancashire asks Dr Dulux: “I'm thinking about painting the outside of my terraced house, but it is a big job and I don't want to get it wrong. What advice can you give me?”

Now’s the ideal time to show the outside of your home some love. After all, when you protect what’s on the outside, you take care of what’s inside.

Dulux Weathershield All Weather Protection Smooth Masonry Paint is a good place to start.

It’s a high-performance exterior paint that protects your home against all weather conditions for up to 15 years. It’s formulated with a unique technology that protects against dirt and mould growth for long lasting colour and finish.

In fact, Dulux are so confident in the product, that it comes with a Lifetime Guarantee. If you experience any flaking, peeling or mould staining while you live in your home, you’ll get your money back!

When it comes to choosing a colour, always be mindful of other homes on your street. You could boost your curb appeal with a bright shade or play it safe with the beautiful Ashen White.

Charlotte suggested taking inspiration for paint colours from your heirlooms or prized possessions. And Jon told us how much he’s loving the painted ceiling trend.

#FeelGoodColour

To finish things off, we also asked the talented Interior Design Masters for their own Feel Good Colour moments. Jon explained why blue makes him feel confident and Charlotte revealed why she has a fondness for bright coral colours.
