Changing Rooms: Episode 5

Transformation 1 – Kerry and Sophie

The Villa Villainess was Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s vision for Kerry and Sophie’s bedroom. He wanted to create a space for them to relax and unwind after a long day.

Using pops of pinks and purples, as well as some dreamy paint effects, Laurence unleashed an explosion of colour and completely transformed the space.

Scroll down to hear more from Kerry and Sophie, or to get Dr Dulux tips on how to recreate the rainbow arch featured in this makeover.

Dulux colours featured in Laurence’s design:

Walls and ceiling: Velvet Robe
Headboard arch: Berry Smoothie/Velvet Robe, Party Balloons, Sweet Pink
Ceiling effect: Sea Nettle, Blue Incense, Berry Smoothie

Transformation 2 – Keith and Kath

The Acid House was Jordan and Russell’s concept when designing Keith and Kath’s living room. They chose an acid yellow, one of Keith’s favourite colours, for the lower walls and painted a subtle neutral on top. The 2LG team also added a band of green to separate the two colours and tie the room together nicely.

Dulux colours featured in the 2LG design:

Top walls and ceiling: Egyptian Cotton (Simply Refresh)
Lower walls: Sweet Citrus
Wall band: Guild Green
Ceiling circle: Guild Green
Fireplace wall: Palm Night

Special Guests: Kerry and Sophie

Not many people can say their bedroom is designed by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, but this week’s special guests can! We had a lovely chat with Kerry and Sophie, two of the homeowners from episode 5. Here’s a taster of their experience on the show.

“Our bedroom was a large, plain space. It was a dumping ground. So, our brief was about making it somewhere we could go after a busy shift and relax, with personality as well”.

They were thrilled to have Laurence working his magic on their makeover.

“I was absolutely dying to have Laurence do our design. I've watched him a lot in the old series, had a bit of a crush on him when I was a teenager!”

And when asked if Laurence delivered for them, they said “definitely, it's absolutely stunning! It's like a boutique hotel, I can go up there and escape. I've even sat at the little desk area and done some work. It is genuinely beautiful.”

Tune in to hear how Kerry and Sophie are feeling about the makeover now, and how much they enjoyed revamping their neighbour’s living room with help from Jordan and Russell.

Dr Dulux: Decorating techniques from the show

In this part of our special podcast series, Dr Dulux explains how you can recreate the painting techniques from the show in your own home.

Transformation 1: How do you create a rainbow arch?

The key to creating a rainbow arch, like Laurence’s headboard design in Kerry and Sophie’s bedroom, is layering similar tones of colour. Start by choosing your main colour and pick two lighter or two darker tones from the same colour family.

Then it’s time to get to work. Paining the arches can be tricky, and so it’s best to follow the Dulux ‘How to Paint a Rainbow Arch’ video. It lists the gear you’ll need for the project, as well as easy-to-follow steps. Check it out

Transformation 2: How do you paint a colour band?

Jordan and Russell painted a band of colour in Keith and Kath’s living room to cleverly divide a split wall. If you want to recreate this design, watch this video and get pointers from a Dulux Select Decorator. Remember, masking tape is going to be your best friend for this job!

When decorating, it’s also important to know that different surfaces require different types of paint, so you can get the best results every time.

Jorden and Russell painted across multiple features in the room. They used Dulux Matt Emulsion on the walls, then Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood on the woodwork, including the door and skirting.
