Before & After: Amazing Space Bedroom Makeover

Sports star and face of Cherished Gold Katarina Johnson-Thompson might be the British record-holder for the high jump and indoor long jump, but she has her feet firmly on the ground where her home is concerned: ‘I get home and it’s like “Ahhhh”. It’s just the feeling of getting home, isn’t it?’ she says. As the face of Dulux's Colour of the Year, we gave Katarina access to our new online interior design service, Dulux Amazing Space, to help her put her own stamp on her bedroom – her sanctuary on her days off from training.

The Brief

Katarina had wanted to redecorate her bedroom for a while as it didn’t reflect the things she loves the most in life. ‘For me, home is a place for relaxation; it’s where my dogs live, where I can spend time with friends and family. When I am training hard, you know, it’s a great feeling to get home and know that I’m done for the day’ she laughs.

Dulux Amazing Space is designed to guide you through your project, from finding inspiration, to finalising colours and details, so it didn’t take long for Katarina to find her style. ‘I didn’t really give my Amazing Space designer a brief, I had a video call with her and I just went with it and trusted her.’ She explains.

The Design

After chatting to Katarina online, her Amazing Space designer Marianna knew that Katarina wanted a cosy and comfortable sanctuary with ‘wow’ factor, and that she was drawn towards a warm-neutral colour palette. Marianna reflected this by choosing rich and striking Summer Surprise 1 for a feature wall opposite the bed, covering wardrobes and all. Behind the bed, Marianna suggested a subtle but glam wallpaper with a marbled look to add texture and a gentle element of pattern.

Our designer worked some of Katarina’s existing furniture into the scheme, including her chest of drawers, mirror and lights. To complement these, she suggested key brand new pieces such as the bedstead, armchair, curtains, as well as new paint and wallpaper. For the finishing touches, accessories including painted picture frames, an upcycled tray and a simple side table were given the Cherished Gold treatment – more than fitting for a gold medal-winning champion!

The Verdict

‘Having one wall a deep plum shade like this is something I never would have done. Also, I would have never have thought of painting the doors and the door frames to match, but I just put my trust in my designer and it’s really paid off. My favourite thing about the room has to be the feature wall and the marble-effect wallpaper – I love it’ Katarina says. ‘It’s made me realise what you can actually do with a bit of paint and some wallpaper. I’ll try and use a bit more colour in the future,’ she smiles.
