Before & After: Beautiful Guest Bedroom

How the couple behind DIY blog Little House on the Corner turned their guest bedroom around.

You only need to glance at their instagram feed or pinterest boards to see that Christine and Jan – A.K.A. the duo behind blog Little House on the Corner – are obessed by all things homes and DIY. They’ve immersed themselves in the process of doing up their Edwardian house, from sanding floors to painting walls and making curtains, proving that you don’t need to be an expert to take on decorating yourself – you just need to have patience, a bit of planning and some elbow grease!

Their guest bedroom makeover is a case in point. To say the room needed an update would be an understatement – dated laminate floors and lurid pink walls wasn’t exactly Christine and Jan’s dream scheme. So they set to work…

’From start to finish it took about a two months to complete – although we’re still adding addition art and finishing touches’ Says Christine. And the biggest challenge of the transformation? ’Sanding the floor was a big job and took longer than we’d expected. It wasn’t difficult to do, but it was hard work!’ Keen to get hands-on with all the big jobs, Christine was most proud of her newly acquired plastering skills ’I plastered some of the walls myself (after taking part in a plastering course) and I’m really pleased with how they turned out.’

After sanding the floors and restoring architectural elements true to the building’s period such as the picture rail and a stained-glass window pane, the couple turned to the fun part – decorating (of course). They chose Clouded Pearl 3 for the walls, a barely-there grey-white shade, to enhance the room’s natural light and lofty ceiling ‘We wanted to create a calm and relaxing space for our guests to enjoy. We love soft grey colours and like to have neutral backgrounds which we accessorise with colourful art and pops of colour’ Christine explains.

To add a pop of colour, they painted an old chair in a shocking pink shade, and upcycled an Ikea Frosta stool into a bedside table by giving it a lick of paint and an extra shelf. A few vintage pieces of furniture such as the wardrobe and bedside cabinet give the room even more character and fun accessories, artwork and cushions bring the whole scheme together.

The room seems to have impressed their guests too; ‘There’s been no complaints so far!’ Says Christine, ‘It’s light and spacious so great for guests to retreat to when they need some time to relax.’
