How to create a kid’s bedroom scheme that lasts

4 clever colour palettes that’ll take them from toddler to tween.

Children change their tastes almost as often as their shoe size, so it makes sense to choose a versatile palette that will grow with them. These tried-and-tested colour schemes will appeal to your in-betweeners without ever growing old.

1. Pick ‘n’ mix

Pastel yellows and greens make for a playful and fun canvas, making them a great choice for all age groups. Softer tones work well for a soothing, gender-neutral nursery scheme, or add a bolder shade or two into the mix to bring the energy levels up for teenagers who want to express themselves.

2. Rose tinted

Pinks and pretty lilacs are perennial favourites with little ones, but to really make sure they stand the test of time it’s wise to go for softer shades which are easier to combine with other colours. That way you can adapt their decor to achieve different looks as they grow up.

Combine pastel pinks carefully and they can work equally well for boys and girls depending on what you team them with.

3. Get your greens

Green is an invigorating choice which, again, works just as well for girls as it does for boys. Better still, green aids concentration, making it a brain-boosting choice for kids doing their homework in their bedrooms. Stick to pale, relaxing tones for the main walls with brighter green accents for a pop of energy if full-on green is too much, or alternatively choose a crisp white backdrop and play with painted motifs and murals for a playful look.

4. Neutral territory

If you thought neutrals meant boring beiges, think again. There’s a whole spectrum of tones that fall under the term ‘neutral’, from earthy caramel shades to muted greys and ice cream tones. Use them as the base for your scheme then add a few bright splashes of colour in the bedding and accessories for a fun, playful look. This also makes the room easy to update without having to repaint. So when the Frozen phase is over, you’ll be left with a blank canvas that they can customise with their latest obsession all over again…

Top tip

If you and your kids are struggling to pick a paint colour (and agree on it), use the Dulux Visualizer app to show them exactly how their room will look once it’s painted. That way, they’re more likely to make a decision they’ll be happy with for years (or at least months!) to come.
