Paint by numbers: how to master the geometric technique

Use the popular geometric technique to create striking shapes, creative patterns and imaginative motifs that won’t go out of style. Follow our step-by-step guide to get started…

A child’s bedroom is not only a place for rest (if you’re lucky); it’s also a space for creativity, imagination and play.

So if you’re looking to create a space that is as unique as your child, stimulates their imagination and is timeless enough that you won’t be reaching for the paint rollers every year, consider the popular geometric paint technique.

It’s easy to see why this technique has seen a recent surge in popularity. Not only does it allow painters to flex their own creative muscles, but the possibilities are also endless – with any number of colour combinations, shapes and patterns at your disposal.

To start, we’d recommend using Easycare Washable & Tough Matt. Not only will its stain-repellent technology make spills easy to wash away, it’s specially formulated to keep light colours bright and clean.

Get creative with colour

In this demonstration, we’ve used Fandango FunGrey WispWhite Cotton and Black to create a dynamic space for kids to learn and play.

Fandango Fun is a winning choice for every child’s bedroom. Not only is orange gender-neutral and a fun and vibrant background to encourage the imagination, but this particular shade also has a warmth to it that prevents it from being too overpowering.

Balance the orange with soothing tones of grey and white, to make it pop and also create a calming influence at bedtime. For a little added character, pair with shapes like playful crosses.

A touch of charm

Tie the look together by adding accessories of similar colour and varying textures to the space. Here, we’ve included a touchable turquoise cushion for extra comfort and a matching bedside table to hold their treasured bedtime reads. A couple of new, furry friends will undoubtedly receive a warm welcome, too.

Here’s an easy-to-follow guide so you can create a playtime paradise:

Method

  1. For your base colour paint walls in Dulux Easycare White Cotton.

  2. Measure and mark out geometric shapes like sharp diagonal lines using chalk and string. Rub chalk along a length of string. Stretch the string across the wall and ceiling then secure it with masking tape at each end. Check the string is straight, then ping it to leave a chalk line across the wall.

  3. Mask off the biggest shape.

  4. Seal edges of tape with Dulux Easycare White Cotton and allow to dry.

  5. Fill in the biggest shape with 1-2 coats of White Cotton then leave to dry.

  6. Remove tape and use new tape over the edge of the White Cotton line.

  7. Seal edges with paint and allow to dry.

  8. Fill the second largest shape with 1-2 coats of Fandango Fun then leave to dry.

  9. Repeat with the final shape, this time painting with Grey Wisp.

  10. Next, cut out cross shapes from your paper and use as stencils. Tape the paper over the white shape and fill with Black. Space out the crosses for a final playful touch.

  11. Enjoy your shape-filled space!
