Scandi cool

Nancy Straughan creates a calm and cool Scandi-inspired furniture upcycle in her rented London flat.

Decorating a rental can be tricky.

But blogger Nancy Straughan transformed her place with only a little lick of paint and some old furniture.

‘I’ve been meaning to update our white bedroom for ages in an attempt to match it with the rest of our home,’ Nancy admits. ‘We have an open plan kitchen and living room that is filled with mid-century furniture and decorative pieces. We love our living space and have spent quite some time making it look the way we want, it’s a shame the bedroom has been a bit neglected. Until now!’

‘Before this project, we had an old wooden chest of drawers that I got for free from an old housemate of mine when I first moved to London. When Simon and I moved in together I made my own chalk paint in a mid-grey colour to cover its dark wood, I was happy with that for a few years but it began to look tired and a little bit dull. The aim was to update the vintage style in the bedroom and transform it to look more Scandinavian inspired. I noticed that my Pinterest boards were dotted with rooms that featured putty pink and dark inky blue tones, I’ve always wanted to introduce dark blues into the flat so this was my chance!’

‘The Dulux colours I opted for were Venetian Crystal 1 in an eggshell finish for the chest of drawers and Silken Sunrise 6 in the matt emulsion for the walls. They go so beautifully together. The wall only needed one coat which was amazing. The drawers were a little trickier! They took two coats and I left the brush stroke textures in to add a lived-in feel to it.’

‘I’m so happy with the final results, it's definitely more enjoyable now. I love walking in the front door and popping my head around the corner to admire it when I come home!’
